Mission Statement:

To educate children through music and storytelling of the rich heritage of our area -- the Appalachian and Native American cultures that have shaped it. Encourage them to explore their own roots. Explore opportunities of the interconnectedness of man, nature, and spirit and how the circle must include all of these aspects to be complete.

Programs Offered

K-3 Program Objectives

The students will:
  1. develop an understanding of Native American culture.
  2. particicpate in Native American chants and songs.
  3. explore Native American resources outside of the classroom.
  4. recognize famous Native Americans.
  5. develop and awareness of nature in the Appalachian area.
  6. learn how ideas can become songs.

Possible Pre-program activities:

  1. on a United States map, locate current Native American reservations.
  2. discuss Native American cultural and religious beliefs.
  3. share stories by Native American authors.
  4. play traditional Native American games.
  5. complete worksheets related to Native American topics.
  6. make Native American toys.
  7. taste Native American food.
  8. color a picture of a traditional Shawnee Indian's attire.


Possible post-program activities:

  1. Using the song "If MY Dog Had Hands" as a guide, write a story about what it would be like if their pet could talk, drive, fly, etc.
  2. Discuss their favorite season and what they enjoy about nature during that season.

4 - 6 Program Objectives


The student will:

  6. learn how ideas can become songs.
Possible pre-program activities:
  1. on a United States map, locate current Native American reservations. Discuss how tribes were forced to locate to these current reservations.
  2. discuss Native American cultural and religious beliefs.
  3. share poems by Native American authors.
  4. define and discuss heritage.
  5. locate Appalachia on the United States map. Discuss how the geographies of Appalachia differ from other areas in the United States.
Possible post-program activities:
  1. Write a report about one or more of the Native Americans mentioned during the performance.
  2. Write a poem about something found in nature.
  3. Write new Lyrics to a famous song
  4. Discuss the importance of Tecumseh in the Ohio region.
