Free is a Real Treasure

Some days, listening to Steve Free just leaves you in tears. It's not the singer/songwriter from McDermott hits the wrong notes. Just the opposite. He's talking to your heart, and sometimes that can be painfully sweet. Like his latest CD, "Coming Home." Here you are, enjoying typical Free - and if you're a fan, that's one of life's pleasures - when along comes cut No. 5, "Everybody's Friend."

As Steve says, "It's a very touching song about losing a friend or loved one, something we all can relate to."

If you remember Bobby Goldsboro's classic, "Honey," you know what I'm talking about. If you can listen to that without shedding a tear, you ain't got no heart.

And I'm not alone in that. Steve Hayes, of 99.3 fame, says he played "Everybody's Friend" on his radio show and people had called into the station crying.

Tears are cleansing, and that's a good thing. "Friend" is going places.

That's nothing new for Steve. His "Just a Baby Boy" - you heard it when he played with the Portsmouth Community Orchestra at Vern Riffe Center for the Arts during the Christmas season - has become an international favorite.

Steve, the 2008 winner of the Governor's Award for Individual Artist, has a long string of honors. And he's just been designated a state "treasure."

He performs at a myriad of venues throughout the area, with audiences from half a dozen to hundreds and more.

Steve also is active in the community, including efforts to save Shawnee Forest.

He can be reached at P.O. Box 262, McDermott, Ohio, 45652, or (740) 858-0710.

The new CD is packed with good sounds - but don't forget to grab a box of tissues!
